Weavers

The Weavers’ Cottages - Lisanne, Fred, and Isabelle, July 2009

We bought the cottages known as the “Buxtons’” in the fall of 2006.  Our first order of business was to clean out the two buildings in order to determine how we would be moving forward with renovations.

It took us a week and at least three dumpsters full of garbage to get the brown and green cottages cleaned out.  We were having a great time looking through all of the cottages’ contents.  We were lucky to salvage some great tables, chairs, and even a few mattresses that eventually found their way to Lower Far View.

We then set about cutting trees to clear the property, not only to let in some sun, but to make way for a new septic system, electrical system, and fresh water well.  That first year it was all we could do to get an infrastructure in place.

Since that fall, we have remodeled the “Brown” cottage, extending the second floor over the porch.  We put in a bathroom upstairs and created two bedrooms.  We tackled the landscaping by creating stone walls, plantings, and a patio.

The “Green” cottage was started this summer (2009).  We hope to have it livable by the summer of 2010.

We have been having a wonderful time creating our very own memories at Sunset Lake and look forward to all of the summers to come.

In 1994,  Kate Bell (Ledgedge) remembered that the green cottage on the left (from lake) was built in 1916 (?).  It was owned by William Weston (a minister from Hancock), Robert Homan, and Etta Miller (school teacher).

The cottage on the right when viewed from the lake was built in 1950 and rebuilt in 2007.

Essay by Linda Buxton, Summer, 2009

When I received a paper and phone call from Sylvia, I just did not know what to say.  Having this place on this lake has meant a lot to me and my family.  There are so many things to say.  Also, this place has two cottages here, which is unusual.  One cottage is what the family used and stayed for the summer.  The other cottage was used by renters for a very long time.  I always looked forward to getting to know the many families that came to stay.  They came from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and West Virginia.  All these people are a part of me and my father.  I had made lots of copies of this paper so I could mail them to people who have been at both cottages to get their memories.  I have not done this yet. Growing up in Washington, I always looked forward to coming here during the summer.  After moving here in New Hampshire, I was always glad to see everyone at the lake and to know the neighbors.
