MARSHALL A. DERBY camp at Sunset Lake in Greenfield, NH

The camp was built in June 1929 by a builder named Werden from Hillsboro, where we lived at the time.

There was only one bedroom, but there were many couches, etc., in the living room and on the big porch where people slept.
We had to carry water from the lake for dishes and cleaning. There was a natural spring up in the back woods where we got our drinking water. There was no inside plumbing until into the mid-forties, when a bathroom was added and we had a pump for water from the lake. We always used the spring for drinking water.
The name of the camp was ODAHKOTAH. This was an Indian name for friend or friendship.

Until I was 16 (1939), my Mother and I moved over to camp in late June and stayed until Labor Day. My father commuted daily to Hillsboro.
My parents kept the cottage until 1954 when they sold it and bought another one on Franklin Pierce Lake in Hillsboro.
Facing the lake, the owners on the left were someone in the Cass family of Peterborough (I don’t remember the names exactly). And on the right was Dr. Karl Kyes, dentist from Peterborough. The lake frontage was 100 feet, but the lot went back to the road in the back.
